There may be a fee if additional assistance to safely carry your pet out of your home is needed.
We are here to answer your questions every day, from 7am - 11pm. Appointments are scheduled throughout the week, please call for availability.
Sometimes, pets take a turn for the worse overnight, so we do our best to accommodate same day appointments with a few hours notice when possible.
If this is a medical emergency, please contact your local veterinarian or one of the emergency clinics listed in the Local Resources section.
Sarah Clarke, DVM
I’ve known I wanted to be a veterinarian since I was about 8 years old- and still have a 3rd grade school paper to prove it! I grew up in Albany, NY, Baltimore, MD and Jacksonville, FL before attending the College of William and Mary in Viriginia for my undergraduate degree in Biology and then returning to Florida to obtain my veterinary degree at the University of Florida.
I grew up always having a mix of animals in the house- cats, dogs, fish, pet mice, and even an occasional rescued baby bird. I loved learning about all these pets almost as much as caring for them, so veterinary school was a perfect fit. After 1 year in small animal general practice in New Jersey after graduating, I took a position at a feline only clinic in Jacksonville, Florida. I remained there for nearly 11 years and formed close bonds with many clients through those years- seeing numerous cats from early in their lives until it was time to guide their owners through the tough decisions at the end. While at that practice I occasionally had the opportunity to make home visits for euthanasia and was always struck by what a different, calmer, and more personal experience it was. It really made a difference to the owners to have their pets in their favorite spot, surrounded by the people and things they love.
I’m very happy to have recently settled in Richmond with my family - my husband Jeff (a veterinary neurologist and fellow UF graduate) our son Andrew, daughter Katie, and our beloved shelter dog Hammie. I hope to be able to help families in this area by making one of the most difficult times they’ll face as pet owners a bit easier and more peaceful.
"I am not sure I can find enough words to show my gratitude to Lap of Love for the work they do. Death is hard, in every form. I have witnessed unexpected death, long lingering deaths, painful death. Death is not easy, no matter how it comes, or how prepared you think you are. Yet, here are people who manage to find a way to ease the horrible pain associated with the death of a beloved pet. Dr. Sarah is truly touched by angels. You can feel that the minute she walks into your house. She helped ease the passage of our beloved dog, Merry, as he made his way over the Rainbow Bridge. She cares. Every single person you interact with when you start dealing with Lap of Love cares. You can feel it. And Dr. Sarah has opened her heart and allowed herself to care even as she is doing this difficult work that could easily make someone numb or burnt out. She has an amazing combination of professionalism, care, gentleness, intelligence, and empathy. She manages to move things along without ever making you feel pushed or rushed. Because of Dr. Sarah and Lap of Love, my baby was able to move over the Rainbow Bridge in as gentle, respectful, and loving way possible. And Dr. Sarah also managed to cradle his distraught loved ones in her capable hands as well. I can not thank Dr. Sarah or the Lap of Love staff enough."

"Dr. Sarah has such a lovely disposition and her calm nature and the way she lead us through the process was very much appreciated. She showed such great compassion for our girl Gabby as well as for our whole family. She was such a warm presence during an incredibly difficult time."

"Dr. Clarke was amazing! We can't begin to thank her enough! She came into our home and took her time with us and explained everything in great detail. She didn't rush anything, made sure that Jamie was as comfortable as possible before euthanizing her. She was very careful loading her into her vehicle as well. She is very caring, compassionate and has an outstanding bedside manner!
I would HIGHLY recommend Dr. Clarke to anyone facing the difficult decision of having to put a pet/family member down. It's a very difficult time/decision and doing it in your home vs having to go through the trouble of bringing your pet to the clinic is so much more comfortable for everyone! Thank you again for your great service and kindness! It is appreciated more than you know!

"I cannot say enough good things about Dr. Sarah. It takes someone special to provide end of life care and she is one of those people. Her kindness and caring helped us through one of the hardest days of our lives. She arrived at our home, impeccably groomed, to find our sweet boy on a bed on the floor where we had slept with him overnight. She immediately knelt down beside him and us. She somehow got to know Chester and us in a short amount of time and was so compassionate. She gave us the gift of knowing we were doing the right thing. We cherish the paw print she made and appreciated that she took fur from three different spots. We weren't sure about doing this at home, but our boy could not walk and we didn't want to add stress for him. Home was the right choice, made that way by Dr. Sarah. We will forever be grateful that she was the one who was with us. Everything she did was done in a caring, respectful, professional way, aimed at making things easier for us and our boy. I do not wish this experience on anyone but highly recommend Lap of Love, and Dr. Sarah, to anyone who has to walk this path."

"Dr. Sarah is an angel on earth. While the entire experience of having to say goodbye to Gracie was emotionally traumatizing leading up to the day of her transition, she made it peaceful and comforting from start to finish. She treated Gracie "as if she was her own dog," and transported her in a sweet woven basket, wrapped in a pink blanket. Gracie left this earth with dignity and surrounded by love. Dr. Sarah has stayed in touch with us and continued to her pour sympathy onto our hearts. I'm extremely grateful for her compassion, it made a world of difference during a time of extraordinary sadness."
