Meet The Doctor

Diane Chesebro, DVM

I was always drawn to animals, feeling a kindred spirit with them. My upbringing started in the San Francisco bay area where our pets were definitely part of the family.  After receiving my undergraduate degree in nursing from UCLA I specialized in caring for patients in the ICU. I learned a great deal about suffering, compassion and healing of the body and soul. Throughout my life I had many wonderful canine companions but I was transformed after losing a beloved dog to cancer. The depth of my loss changed my perspective on the profound human animal bond. My passion for animals prompted me to pursue my veterinary degree at Washington State University, graduating in 1986.

After veterinary school my love of scuba diving lead me to Key West, Florida where I owned All Animal Veterinary Clinic for 13 years. I returned to California to be close to my family and practice in a Roseville veterinary clinic. During this time I witnessed my father decline and pass with the kind guidance of hospice.

My other interests include raising service puppies for Canine Companions for Independence, skiing, cycling, and contra dancing.  I also enjoy helping Veterinary students with a Healer’s Art course.  I have devoted my life to the compassionate care of both people and their beloved pets. It is my desire to make the final days of your pets life as stress free and comfortable as possible. End of life is difficult for everyone. I can guide you and your beloved pet through this transition.

"We are so grateful for Dr. Diane's sincere and tender care for both us and our Missy in sending her to her final rest . Dr. Diane walked us through each step and let us do it in our own time. She was a calming presence in a heartbreaking moment. Thank you Dr. Diane for being there for all of us."

"Our beloved Shasta was in so much pain and her quality of life was diminishing quickly. We made the decision to put her at peace and chose to do that in the comfort of our/her home. Diane was very calming and pleasant from the moment she walked through our door. She introduced herself to us then to Shasta. She asked us questions to familiarize herself with us, Shasta and our history together. She explained step by step what the process was and what would happen. She also let us know what to expect from our other dog in regards to her grief. Shasta was treated with dignity and respect every step of the way. Diane sat with us as we watched our beautiful girl slip into peaceful sleep and gently touched my husband's shoulder when she confirmed that she had passed. She allowed us as much time as we needed to say our goodbyes. Before Shasta passed through our door for the last time, Diane made a plaster imprint of her paw and gave us a lock of her hair. This was a very difficult morning for us but we are glad that we sent Shasta over the Rainbow Bridge the way we did. It was better than leaving her on a metal table in a brightly lit vet room. I don't wish for anyone to have to face the loss of a furry family member, but when the time does come, I would highly recommend Lap of Love to help ease your pain. Thank you, Diane, for helping us through this sad event in our lives with kindness and respect."

"Maggie was not only my dog of almost 14 years, but also my best friend. She was by my side from the minute we saved her from a pet store to the moment she passed away. To say that she loved me unconditionally is an understatement. Losing her has left a huge hole in our families hearts and although we did everything we could to prolong her life, in the end, we had to make a choice that was best for her. I knew that bringing her to a vet office was never an option when we decided to put her to sleep. Her biggest fear was going to the vet and I couldn't have that be her last memory. Dr Diane knew from the moment she entered our home how much we loved our baby girl. She took the time we needed to ensure Maggie was comfortable and never scared. We were able to sit in the back yard with her and spend her last moments on this earth on her terms. Making the choice to put your animal to sleep is one of the hardest decision a human has to make, but with the compassion of Dr Diane, I knew that Maggie knew she was loved until the very end. Knowing the experience we had with Lap of Love and Dr Diane, I would never choose another option with regards to euthanasia. She was so compassionate and truly understands the bond between a family and their pets.

Thank you from the bottom of our heart Dr Diane."

"Our beloved kitty Clancy blessed us with his life and spirit for almost 20 years. When we saw how quickly he was deteriorating from the combination of old age and kidney failure, we knew we wanted to help him cross over as soon as we could so he wouldn't be in pain anymore. Luckily for us, Dr. Chesebro was able to come on the same day we contacted her, which meant so much to us.

She contacted us several times before arrival to get background on Clancy, and also to keep us apprised of when she would be arriving. Once she arrived, she was kind and patient, explaining the procedure and what to expect. She never made us felt rushed, and gave us plenty of time to pet and hold and talk to Clancy through the whole process. Her soft demeanor and comforting words helped us to cope with the loss of our sweet baby boy.

When it was time to leave, she first shaved off a bit of Clancy's black and white hair (he was a tuxedo cat) and placed it in a little plastic tube for us to keep. Next, she made a plaster cast of his paw print, so we will also have that by which to remember him. Lastly, she brought in a nice little lined basket, in which we placed Clancy's body, then covered him in another blanket, like he was getting put to bed. For some reason, that act really touched me and I so truly appreciated it.

Dr. Chesebro was respectful and professional and a comfort in our difficult time. Thank you so much."

"I discovered Lap of Love last Saturday when my beloved Kate became seriously ill. I just knew that something had happened and it was time. I didn't want to put her through the anxiety of going to the vet to confirm what I knew in my heart. I found Lap of Love via Google and discovered Dr. Diane was nearby. She contacted me prior to coming to ask questions and make sure that Kate was in need of help. That was the beginning of her stellar, compassionate care.

From the moment Dr. Diane arrived, she was calm, graceful and completely in tune to what was going on. She treated Kate with the utmost kindness and dignity. I felt like my family member had come to help me with such a painful decision. The whole time she remained calm and kind and loving to both Kate and I.

Every moment was honorable and considerate. I felt so blessed by God for connecting me with Dr. Diane when I needed her so very much. Kate passed peacefully and with dignity and love. I am forever grateful to Dr. Diane and to Lap of Love for their services.

“I write a weekly newsletter and here it is:
Bone tired. Collapsed by the fire, exhausted. Just wanna curl up in a ball under a blanket, weep. Standard advice in moments like this? No worries, it will pass. But for me? Screw that wisdom. Energizer bunny types learn to cherish episodes like this. I told Gabrielle once I needed to cultivate ...
